Developing the system of modern agricultural product supply centers in Vietnam: workshop

On May 28, a workshop “Developing the system of modern agricultural product supply center in Vietnam in the period of 2018 -2020 and towards 2030” organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in coordination with Hanoi People's Committee.

The workshop was chaired and directed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, with the participation of representatives of Hanoi City People's Committee; leaders of  ministries, localities; French Embassy, ​international organizations; enterprises; and press reporters.

The content of the program focuses on planning and development of farm produce wholesale markets, a system of modern agricultural supply centers in Vietnam.

At the Conference, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Mr. Nguyen Van Suu said, wholesale markets play an important role in distribution channels of food and agricultural products of the City. Most types of agricultural products in Hanoi are distributed and consumed through wholesale markets of agricultural products (old style) and local markets. The rest is distributed by supermarkets, companies, specialized stores, and convenience stores. Mr. Suu said that with the current situation of agricultural product distribution system, the development of modern agricultural supply centers is suitable to control and ensure food safety and demand for higher quality products, agricultural products with clear origins and the ability to supply large quantities of agricultural products for export.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Director of the Central Office of the New Rural Coordination Office, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is developing a scheme "Developing a system of modern agricultural supply centers in Vietnam." period 2018-2020 and orientation to 2030 "with the support of the French Embassy and the French Development Agency - AFD in Vietnam. According to Mr. Tien, the assessment of the current situation and development of the system of agricultural product supply centers and wholesale markets is now an important direction, a basis for building and developing the system of agricultural supply centers. modernization contributes to one of the major objectives of the National Target Program on new rural construction in the period of 2016-2020.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Nam - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, the system of modern agricultural supply centers (through farm produce wholesale markets, agricultural transaction centers or agricultural trading floors ) is an effective consumption channel, connected production with distribution and consumption of agricultural products, quality assurance and food safety, promoting trade and service development. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has proposed the Deputy Prime Minister to advocate the project "Developing a system of modern agricultural supply centers in Vietnam for the period of 2018-2020 and orientation to 2030" and has been agree at Official Dispatch No. 1190 dated 1.2.2018. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) agreed to research and develop a project with the help of the French Development Agency (AFD). It is expected that the scheme will be submitted to the Prime Minister in the third or fourth quarter of 2019.

At the seminar, many consulting units to build wholesale markets, the international agricultural supply chain also participated in the discussion. According to the experience of experts, building wholesale markets is a very effective way to ensure food safety management and create trade opportunities not only in the country but also internationally.
